ROYAL REUNIONS

Amanda and Richard

Share Memories

Meeting at the Royal for the first time in several years, old friends Richard Spooner and Amanda caught up on each others current careers. Richard is now a US team rider based in Los Angeles and Europe and has been show-jumping recently in World Cup venues, such as Malaysia, Rome and Spruce Meadows. Amanda was Richard's first ever student--here in Ottawa--when she was a teenager. Richard coached her to a series of equitation medals. Today, Amanda carries on that tradition coaching riders in hunters, jumpers and equitation, together with competing herself in national show-jumping.

For more on "The Master of Faster" go to;      www.richardspooner.com

The Royal also gave Amanda a chance to say hello to Michelle--official photographer at the Royal--and Patrick Fields, a frequent contributor to Horse Sport magazine. Once upon a time, Patrick was the manager at Elmcroft and he and Michelle lived in the farm house. Today they enjoy riding in the Toronto area.

LATEST NEWS

ON THE IOB AT WESTAR

Lindsay Iob riding Natasha Gauthier’s Laporello continued her winning ways at the Westar show weekend, June 20-21. Lindsay was Pre-Novice Champion; Novice Reserve Champion and won the Equitation. Not to be out done, Genvieve Desormeaux pulled in the Short-Stirrup Championship riding Marco Polo. That pony was back in action the next day with Brooke Murray, who collected a handful of ribbons in Small-Medium Pony Hunters and topped it off with a second in Equitation. Meanwhile Pascal Lepine on her JustaHabit took top Equitation honours and high ribbons in another ring. Over in jumpers, Samantha MacGillivray, Andrea McCullagh and Kourtney Shayanpour were up against tough competition with up to 38 riders in some classes; but everyone benefitted from the challenges and horses and riders improved with experience as the day went on. Congratulations to our coaches Melanie Auger and Amanda Hay on a good set of show results—especially in Equitation.

ASHLAND OPENERS

Ten horses from Elmcroft competed over the June 6-7 weekend at the beginning of Ashland's Equine Canada Silver and Bronze shows. It also marked the debut of Impervious in the jumpers with a new rider-Kourtney Shayanpour. Impervious came home with a good blue ribbon in a field of thirty-two and Kourtney looked quite at home on him. Samantha MacGillivray pulled off very creditable 3rd and 6th places in the Trillium Jumpers in pouring rain. In the hunter rings, Lindsay Iob and Natasha Gauthier's Laporello continued their winning ways with a Reserve Championship in Novice, plus a second place and a win in Equitation. Pascale Lepine had a great day with seconds and thirds in her classes on her own JustaHabit, while Mackenzie Whitman collected good ribbons in Short-Stirrups on Sir Kostalot. Brave work by Gabrielle Morrison on Jiminy Criquet saw her complete substitute rounds after a judging error mistakenly ruled her "off-course". Alison Moore's Cornetta, Andrea Mc Cullagh's Homeward Bound, and Amanda Hay's Ultimo all put in good rounds in training circumstances.

RED AND BLUE RIBBONS GALORE

The beginning of the local show season has seen a rich harvest of ribbon prizes for Elmcroft riders on the Silver and Bronze Equine Canada circuits. Lindsay Iob riding Natasha Gauthier's Laporello was outstanding in winning both pre-Novice and Novice Championships at the NNEP, as well as taking Reds and Blues in Equitation. Her successes mirrored those of Amelia von Finkenstein on Sir Kostalot who was pre-Novice Champion at Fiddlers Green show and a close runner up at NNEP in hunter classes and Equitation. Meanwhile, Pascal Lepine on her Justa-Habit brought back high ribbons at Fiddlers in her Equitation classes and Mackenzie Whitman proved herself a strong ribbon winner in short Stirrupsat NNEP. Brooke Murray is back in the ribbons this year on Marco Polo in small pony hunters and C Equitation-more to come for sure. Samantha MacGillivray rode her Animo to high ribbons in the Trillium Jumper at NNEP, while Andrea McCullagh on Homeward Bound took the win in Jumper Equitation at the NNEP Bronze show and notched a high placing in a jump off class. Meanwhile, Elmcroft riders have been having fun in the Low Hunters; Alison Moore and Cornetta were champions at NNEP and Amanda Hay was Champion with Ultimo at Fiddlers and Reserve Champion at NNEP. Congratulations to these and all our other riders on good showings to kick-off the 2009 Silver/Bronze season.

Spring Wrap-Up In-House Show

Elmcroft riders took advantage of a beautiful sunny day on May 3rd. to hold the fourth and final show in their Winter Series in the Horizon sand ring at our equestrian centre. Excellent competition resulted in the following overall series awards;

" Open Hunter: Champion, Gabrielle Morrison; Reserve Champion, Lindsay Iob. " Equitation; Medal on the flat; Kourtney Shayanpour, Medal over fences, Lindsay Iob

" Low Jumper; Champion, Andrea MacCullagh; Reserve Champion, Cydney Laughton-Egan.

" High Jumper; Champion, Samantha MacGillivray; Reserve Champion, Kourtney Shayanpour.

Thank you to our judges, course designers, parents, supporters and coaches for their assistance. Congratulations to all the participant riders and their superb horses. We look forward to a terrific season on the Gold, Silver and Bronze circuits this year.

New Riders at Elmcroft

The Spring season has brought a new group of riders with a variety of previous riding experience to take lessons at Elncroft. Among the new juniors we welcome are Amanda, Amelia, Laura, Taylor, and Victoria, together with mature riders Andre and Susanne. We wish them all very happy days at our barn and success, on their own terms, in our lesson programs.

North American Young Riders Clinic, Toronto, late April 2009

The Ontario Hunter Jumper association [OHJA] put on a Norman Dello Joio clinic for aspiring young jumper riders at the York Equestrian Centre, in Newmarket on April 27-28. Amanda and Keith attended as observers to see the Toronto standards of riding, learn from Norman, and put in place at Elmcroft programs that could channel our riders towards participation in the very demanding NAYR selection process. Norman excels as a teacher and it was a very useful two-day skills up-grade for both riders and coaches. OHJA may consider holding a similar session in the Ottawa area for the 2009-10, season.

Born on 30 March, 2009 at VDL in Holland, this is Alison Moore's youngest filly.

She is "Ellamieka" (Corland x Darco x Indoctro).

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

  • Bronze [Schooling] and Silver [Trillium] Horse Shows at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, Saturday and Sunday, May 9-10.

  • A fourth tack room with large lockers is nearing completion for your horse tack and equipment storage.

  • Three more turnout paddocks are scheduled to open in May, 2009.

IN MEMORY OF SMART ALEC, FEB., 2009

A “SMART ALEC” TROPHY

Smart Alec was a super-star in the Child-Adult Jumper classes. His recent sudden loss affects many people who rode him, watched him, and worked with him at the shows and at home.  He was in every way a Thoroughbred horse who deserves to be remembered.

He was a son of the great race horse Manila—a winner of the Breeders Cup—but Alec wasn’t much of a track star. Alec found his talent as an efficient jumper. With his fearless approach and great heart he would make virtually every round look good, regardless of the course difficulties. In the jump-off, his speed would match or exceed other competitors.

Alec helped a lot of riders get started on their jumper careers; Melanie rode him to the Quebec Circuit Reserve Championship; Mike rode him to the Ontario Provincial Finals; Samantha showed him successfully at Child-Adult level; and Kourtney put in some of the most dazzling rounds ever seen on the Trillium Circuit. Many other folks were schooled on this feisty little horse who really loved to show off, but in realty was a sweet animal behind all the competitive bluster.

Amanda and Keith first saw Alec in the ring at Ashland many years ago and agreed on the spot to buy him from Tic-Toc Stables of Gatineau. Alec soon proved his worth, winning the ECTA Jumper Trophy a handful of times. He was a great addition to the Elmcroft family of super horses and an outstanding member of that group of Thoroughbred horses that have done so well with us.

So let’s not forget “Alec The Great” aka. Smart Alec and dedicate a new Trophy to his lasting memory as a super-star on the Ontario and Quebec jumper circuits. Please talk to Mel, Amanda or Keith if you would like to contribute.

NEW BOARDERS, RIDERS AND FOALS
Well-known senior amateur rider Alison Moore has come to Elmcroft as a new boarder bringing her horse Cornetta—a young Dutch jumper. Alison is recognized as a Grand Prix rider who has shown extensively in the US, Europe and Canada. Meanwhile, we also welcome the Witman family with the new Elmcroft-leased large pony Sir Kostalot to be ridden by both Mackenzie and Grace Witman.

On the domestic front, foals Dolce Vita [Judgement] and Cool Cherokee [Coolman] are now weaned and beginning to grow rapidly, perhaps at some much later date to become jumpers, while Freya is well in foal to Conquest for spring delivery.

JOERG GIVES ELMCROFT S/J CLINIC

Special guest Allison Moore and her mare Cora joined with a group of Elmcroft riders to participate in a two-day show-jumping training clinic in our Horizon sand ring. Joerg Muenzner--Silver Medal Olympian at Barcelona--who hails from Germany ------worked with participants on gymnastics and course riding, while a group of supporters and friends watched the results. Every horse-rider combination benefited from Joerg's technical expertise and precise attention to key details. We expect him back at Elmcroft in Spring 2009.

GEORGE MORRIS IS THE TEACHER OF EXECELENCE

Once again, Morven Park was the site of the George Morris’ 2008 jumping clinic. Amanda and Keith attended the three 8-hour days of high level teaching during the second week of October. George’s classes were full of eager riders, with many auditors, all keen to learn the details of his world-renowned riding system. George chose Amanda as his “legger-upper’ as he demonstrated finer points continuously on students’ horses; this was a bit stressful—as you wouldn’t want to drop the 70 year old-plus George!

George makes his point

Over the three days there were some remarkable student improvements, and at each session George shared his technical insights and key issues with the attendees. He was particularly proud of US Team Members Beezie Madden and McLain Ward as exponents of his system [George was US Chef d’Equipe at HKG], and he also complimented Canadian medal-winning riders, Eric Lamaze, Ian Millar and Mac Cone as great examples of his methods. George was delighted that the North American riders had outshone those from Europe at the Hong Kong—China Olympics. All in all, it was a stimulating three days of intense learning for all in attendance and well worth the journey to Virginia for Amanda and Keith.

NATIONAL CAPITAL SHOW JUMPING TOURNAMENTS

Andrea McCullagh aboard Homeward Bound brought home the Championship in Children's Hunters while Nero did the same with Amanda in a Jumper Division. Among those earning ribbons at these shows were Leslie  Holtom, Cydney Laughton-Egan, Samantha MacGillivray, Kourtney Shayanpour, Mike Sallis, and Amanda on her young jumpers, Bravado and Impervious (see opposite column for pix).

Many thanks to our head groom Lauren Sheremeta for a lot of hard work at these shows and her demo of a wonderful round in the Grooms Class on Smart Alec.

HUNTERS TOO!!

People occasionally ask if Elmcroft only competes Jumpers--No, we have first class Hunters too. At the recent Park show, Celidhe Wynn rode Natasha Gauthier's Laporello to a Reserve Championship in the Training Hunters plus picking up high ribbons in other hunter classes and equitation. Brooke Murray does very well in every Short-Stirrup class on our paint pony Marco Polo; Pascal Lepine is a consistent high ribbon winner in Novice classes on JustaHabit; and Amanda has started to show Ultimo in the Green Hunters, where he collected a ribbon in every over-fences class at his recent first show. Yes--we show hunters and we have several more coming shortly. Come and see them at the farm.

HAPPY RETURNS TO THE PARK AND WESTAR

NNEP and WESTAR SHOWS, 2008

In good weather, Elmcroft riders did well at consecutive weekend shows in mid-July. Alice Salway on Bobby Brown and Robert Paterson on Van Quick made debuts in jumpers at the Nepean National Equestrian Park, while Gabrielle Morrison on Jimini Criquet rode well in her first ever jumper outing at Westar, with no rails down in three classes. Samantha MacGillivray helped out as a catch rider at both shows prepping horses.

Andrea McCullagh and Homeward Bound

Andrea McCullagh was rock-steady on Homeward Bound reaping high ribbons in the Hopeful Jumpers with Cydney Laughton- Egan putting in cultured performances on Black Tie Affair. Lindsay Iob again took home a fistful of ribbons for her efforts at the Park with On The Fly, while Brooke Murray was Reserve Champion both weekends riding the beguiling Marco Polo in Short Stirrups

Cydney Laughton-Egan on Black Tie Affair

Kourtney Shayanpour stunned all her supporters with back-to-back Championships at the Park and then Westar in her first ever starts in the 30+ strong fields for the Child/Adult Jumpers--of course she was aboard the formidable Smart Alec! On her own Buenos Aires, Kourtney also picked up other ribbons in these classes as well as in 'B' equitation. Mike Sallis made the big break-through on Pinot Grigio, culminating in clear rounds and then a 6th place in the C/A Speed class at Westar. Finally, Amanda took youngsters Bravado and Impervious for outings in two Trillium Jumper classes in the good footing and challenging layout of the GP ring at the Park. She won the last class of the day on Impervious as a warm up for his debut at Bromont International next week.
